What is a Doula?
A Doula is a birth professional, sometimes referred to as a labor assistant. Doulas provide emotional, physical, and informational support to birthing women and their families.
As your Doula...
I will encourage you through your birth experience into your journey as a parent. Whether you are expecting your first child or your sixth, I believe you know how to birth. Birth is a right of passage. You will carry the memory of your birth into the rest of your life, and I believe you deserve the whole of your process to be honored every step of the way. I am experienced in working with diverse communities and familiar with a wide array of birth traditions, cultural practices, and beliefs. I follow the DONA Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
What is unique about my practice is the breadth and depth of my experience working with families in related professions. I have worked with families as a teacher and administrator in Waldorf education. I have facilitated Attachment Parenting groups and currently facilitate Simplicity Parenting integration groups. I carry with me a wealth of knowledge and training to support women and families, and I hold a Master’s degree in Human Development.
My training as a Doula was completed with Gail Tully of Spinning Babies and the Turtle Women Doula Project of MN. Turtle Women, a diverse community with Native American roots, were featured in Mothering Magazine Issue 127, November/December 2004. Though I have been a Doula for more than a decade, I continue my training to learn about new issues and trends. I currently meet with a group of wonderful women at Big Belly Doula Services and will be taking courses at Simkin Center for Allied Birth Vocations at Bastyr this year.
